Georges De La Tour distinguished himself for his great ability to control light sources. For this reason he is considered one of the most original prosecutors of the Caravaggesque school.
In daylight works, the careful and precise rendering of the details reveals a naturalistic component. In subsequent works there is a need for greater essentiality and simplification of volumes highlighted above all in the candlelit night scenes where the figures stand out in the backlit space. In later works his investigation tends now to the geometrization of space and the definition of impeccable shapes towards an abstract and timeless dimension.

The De La Tour exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan proposes a series of comparisons and reflections on natural painting and on luministic experiments through five sections focused on individual iconographic subjects and on themes such as the journey of painters between Italy and Northern Europe .
