Mudec – Via Tortona, 56, Milano

Dal 19 novembre 2025 al 28 giugno 2026

The site-specific installation by Chiharu Shiota (Osaka, 1972), titled The Moment the Snow Melts, will be presented to the public in November in the spaces of MUDEC – Museum of Cultures in Milan. This work is an anticipation of the major exhibition dedicated to the artist, “The Meaning of Snow”, whose inauguration is scheduled for February 2026.

The structure is made up of a dense network of light-colored threads that, suspended and taut, descend vertically and plumb from the ceiling. Within this spatial configuration, almost recalling an ongoing snowfall, numerous notes and small pieces of paper float. Each of these fragments bears the inscribed name of people who, despite having played a role in our lives, can no longer be met—for reasons related to distance, changes in life, or, irrevocably, to loss.

The installation is thus configured as a reflection on presence-absence and the persistence of memory, proposing to investigate the way in which biographical traces and interpersonal relationships continue to inform and define individual identity, despite the interruption of physical contact or the passing of the people themselves.
