MUDEC – Museo delle Culture, Via Tortona 56, Milan
From September 25 2025 to February 8 2026
The exhibition is conceived as an in-depth journey into the genius of Maurits Cornelis Escher (Leeuwarden, 1898 – Laren, 1972), a Dutch graphic artist who, through his works, created a unique synthesis of the principles of art, the rigor of mathematics, and the concepts of visual science.
The exhibition presents a selection of over 90 original works, including a vast repertoire of engravings, lithographs, and drawings that outline his unmistakable compositional universe, characterized by non-Euclidean geometries, optical illusions, and representations of structurally impossible worlds.
Maurits Cornelis Escher, born in the Netherlands, focused on graphic art after initial training in architecture. He was inspired by his stays in Italy and the study of the geometric motifs of the Alhambra in Spain. During his lifetime, Escher was not widely sought after by official art circles, leading a modest existence. His work gained widespread recognition primarily among scientists and mathematicians, who saw in it the visual application of their theories. Only later, starting in the 1970s, did his art achieve broad popular resonance and full critical rehabilitation, establishing him as an influential and transversal figure whose legacy continues to inspire various fields today, from the theory of perception to design.
