The artist’s career spans a period from the sixties to today through exemplary works combining tradition and modernity, Western and Eastern culture.
Always fascinated by the great themes related to the meaning of existence such as the relationship between man and nature and the spiritual dimension, Bill Viola has identified video technology as a means to make viewers reflect by immersing them in the evocative images of his works that draw on the religious iconography of every era, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance to the Mannerism of Pontormo, reworked in a modern key.
The exhibition in Milan offers visitors a way to find themselves contemplating the deep issues that Bill explores with slow motion images in which light, color and sound can create moments of deep introspection. Emotions, meditations and passions can emerge from his videos, accompanying the viewer on an inner journey. The viewer is so overwhelmed in a whirlwind of emotions and passions that put him in dialogue with the protagonists of the videos he is observing and push him to reflect on the fact that – as Bill Viola claims – “All art is contemporary. It is timeless, universal and eternal”.
