Exhibition of Robert Doisneau

One of the most important photographers of the twentieth century.

Royal Palace in Milan

From 9 May to 15 October 2023

Tuesday/Sunday at 10 – 6 pm

The guided tour of the exhibition of Robert Doisneau in Milan will be an opportunity to retrace the career of one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century, through a rich selection of iconic shots and unpublished shots that have marked the history of photography and that can return all the immediacy, effectiveness and emotional sincerity of the subjects, caught by a photographer who was considered a “fisherman of moments”.

The exhibition recounts over fifty years of Robert Doisneau’s career,  considered, together with Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the fathers of French humanist photography and street photojournalism, through a path divided into sections that analyzes its themes from war to liberation, work, love, children’s games, leisure, music, fashion, knowing how to translate the gestures, desires and emotions of humanity between the thirties and the sixties. The subjects of his photographs are in fact Parisians: women, men, children, lovers, animals, friends, artists, writers and poets.

The more than 130 works on display, all coming from the Doisneau archive in Montrouge, will lead the visitor on an exciting walk in the gardens of Paris, along the Seine, through the streets of the center and suburbs, in the bistros of the French capital, fixing with its objective the image of a city now disappeared.

Among the masterpieces on display, there is also Le baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville from 1950, which portrays a young couple kissing in front of the Paris City Hall while people walk fast and distracted. The work has been identified as a symbol of the ability of photography to stop the moment. This image represents the life of the Paris of 1950, in particular, reborn after the tragedy of the war.

Doisneau’s art cannot be limited to just Kiss. All his intense life testifies to an ability to see, and say, with depth, absolutely original. This new anthological exhibition at the Diocesan Museum of Milan, once again a prestigious venue for the art of the masters of photography, will accompany us throughout the summer, until next October 15.
